Weymouth is a busy seaside town situated at the heart of the beautiful Jurassic Coast. It has attracted visitors to its sandy beaches and safe waters since the 1780s, when George III visited the town for his health. His visits are commemorated by a colourful statue on the seafront and a white horse and rider cut into the chalk at Osmington.
Today, Weymouth is a great base for all types of water sport, from kite-surfing to scuba diving, and Portland Harbour is home to the National Sailing Academy, England’s premier sailing venue.
Weymouth is also popular with walkers as the South West Coast Path runs along its coastline and nature reserves on Chesil Beach and Radipole Lake provide particularly good bird watching.
The road system, including the main A354 into the town, was extensively remodelled in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Weymouth has a good range of High Street shops and supermarkets, as well as many shops and restaurants catering for the tourist trade.
